software OS4   software OS4 : AmiSystemRestore r1 beta released (for AmigaOS4)
   posted by ChrisH on 30-Jul-2012 19:55:45 (4023 reads)
This is the first public beta of AmiSystemRestore.

AmiSystemRestore aims to give AmigaOS4 a similar ability to Window's very useful System Restore. What it does is create Restore Points, which act as snapshots of your SYS: partition (where the OS is stored). If anything changes on your SYS: partition, then you can roll it back to the time of the snapshot.

Why would you want to undo changes to your SYS: partition? Well, if you install a new program (or update an existing one), you have no idea if any new libraries (or other changes) will have problems that may break existing programs. A badly written installer might even replace libraries (etc) with older versions!

AmiSystemRestore allows you to undo all recent changes (whether or not they were done by the installer), and return SYS: to an earlier point in time. Knowledgable users can be more selective about which changes are undone, with the warning that they need to know what they are doing!

If you are installing something using AmiUpdate or the official Installer system, then AmiSystemRestore will automatically create Restore Points for you (and Ringhio messages should notify you of this).

This is a public beta of AmiSystemRestore. Although I and a small number of testers have not noticed any stability problems in over 6 months of use, there is still the possibility of crashes or lock-ups with untested programs or situations, due to the complexity of the OS patching done by AmiSystemRestore. So as a precaution I advise that you make a backup of your main OS partition (also known as SYS:) before using AmiSystemRestore.

You can download it from OS4Depot.net.

I got fed-up of being "careful" (aka manually backing-up & inspecting all system files before manually installing them, and avoiding automated installers as if they were written by psychopaths), not to mention not having the time to do that these days, so the only solution was to write a program that would automatically back-up any changed system files... and given my incredibly dull imagination for names, AmiSystemRestore was born

Oh, and AmiSystemRestore's basic concept sounded pretty simple in principle (if you are familar with copy-on-write)... but let's just say that the reality of implementing it didn't quite match up to my expectations.

Wow Chris. Very impressive.

I'm also very careful with my sys: partitions. This sounds like it could be a very useful tool.

Great stuff. I hope people don't complain that it just makes OS4 like Windows. Things like this are good and useful to any OS.

I cannot YET recommend that beta-testers (other than me) use it, because there is still the chance of wierd problems/bugs that people might wrongly think are due to OS4 (rather than AmiSystemRestore)... and I'm sure you can imagine the OS4 devs wouldn't be pleased to chase phantom OS4 bugs!

So IMHO, best for beta-testers to wait until the "final" (non-beta) r1 release. (Which could be some months away.)

But, if you 'must' use AmiSystemRestore now, then please ensure that, before reporting any OS4 bugs, you (1) temporarily disable AmiSystemRestore in WBStartup, then (2) soft reboot, and then (3) check the bug still exists (with ASR having never run). You need to do all that, because quitting ASR (without rebooting) may not always be sufficient, since there are situations where the OS patches might not be completely removed.

It looks like this is a MUI option. Go to "MUI settings" (from the 4th icon in the top right of the window titlebar), then the "System" tab, then tick "icon in AmiDock" and untick "icon on Workbench".

This seems to work (also) as a SYS: partition backupping tool, does it?

Any possibility to get modern full system backup/restore tool out of this project?

@everyone
Thanks for your kind words hopefully AmiSystemRestore lives-up to your expectations!

@KimmoK
As it's ReadMe says in the WARNINGS chapter:
Quote:
AmiSystemRestore is not an alternative to a full backup of your main OS partition, as it will not prevent corruption of the filingsystem, nor prevent formatting of the partition.

Nor would it be suitable for "backing up" of other partitions.

@ChrisH
Thanks for the info and thanks for the tool, I will surely find it helpfull.

Sorry if this is stupid guestion, but:
Is it possible to output diff of what has changed between restore points?
(no access to Amiga currently, so can not dig myself much)

(I would like start to save changelogs of my messings with the OS, so far I kept manual log, but lazyness is often in the way...)

Sorry, I missed your reply.

If you choose "Limited restore" for Restore mode (at the bottom), then it will only tick those files which have changed between the currently selected restore point & the one after it.

@vox
It's basically working fine for me although there will be at least one more beta release at some point.
