@ppcamiga1

P1022 and it's non compliant FPU had already been discussed in 2012 when the UltimatePPC A3000/A4000 accelerator was made public.

APM86290 would have been a better choice, it was announced in 2010 and was definitely available at least as early as 2012. Specification wise it's virtually identical to the P1022 but it has PPC465 cores with standard FPU units, 256kb L2 per core instead instead of a single 256kb cache and the PCIE interfaces are version 2. It even has an LCD interface for basic video output.

P1022 was chosen because Trevor was offered 1000 chips for a good price.

@Gunnar

Yep, but I guess it’s going to depend on complexity of geometry, how many floats, there are. Older games have less complexed geometry. Something like DOOM3 will probably have a huge hit on performance.

Older game used inverse square route function, is combination of float and integer instructions. I know it actually became its on instruction on modern x86/x64, not sure if there is equal opcode for PowerPC, or if we need to fall back on the hack. Well who knows PPC was popular in game industry on PS3/XBOX for a while, maybe.

Don't all the 3D games not need an FPU?
How about Quake or the new released game Heretic II
This needs an of course an FPU.

What effect on the game FPS has this?

I'd imagine they'd get bogged down pretty quickly.

Dan has made SPE versions of all his games/ports. The SPE version of Tower 57 is significantly faster on the A1222 than the standard version on Sam460. Tower 57 is pure software rendering. 3D gets more complicated id drivers and API are hitting the FPU a lot. Dan has also made a SPE version of MiniGL but there is also Warp3D Nova, OpenGLES 2.0 and GL4ES that ideally need SPE version if they don't already exist.

@eliyahu

While reasonable people can debate the virtues of the 1022 choice in 2014, I challenged the approach of custom motherboards and whole retail systems from the outset of A-EON’s AmigaOne chapter.

Back in 2009, continuing with PowerPC for a new attempt at providing hardware for AmigaOS 4 made sense, even in light of the fact that Apple had already transitioned away from PowerPC by then.
But I was critical at the go-to-market approach with some bombastic token nod to the A1000, and the aim to release a retail ready X1000 system in line with the 25th anniversary of the original’s launch.

As some say, it’s not a problem unless one has a solution, and back in 2010/11 I outlined an alternative go-to-market approach in an article published on the Amiga RoundTable website at the time. This was freely available advice from a person who has experience in releasing hardware products.

While it was too late to change anything about the imminent release of the X1000, it could have been adopted, in part or in entirety after the X1000 launch.
But the assembled egos in the room preferred the idea of bespoke and expensive custom motherboard based systems. Trevor as it happens, wanted his white whale of an X5000, again as a token nod to the once rumored but never released A5000.

The way I see it, the A1222 is just the next and quite likely final PowerPC product in an overall flawed product strategy. People can and will waste time bickering about how the workaround for the lack of FPU is or isn’t good enough, meanwhile most people are ignoring the bigger issue: The A1222 should never have been made in the first place.

There's much unneeded talk about topics already discussed elsewhere, it doesn't seem quite the right place to repeat those once again IMO

@pixie

EXACTLY

The a1222 for better or worse is here and is a product of years of debate that DOES NOT need to be repeated for the 1000th time HERE.

For the naysayers, fine you have your opinions and have some good arguments for those opinions but again we do not need to hear them again.

For the rest of us that are interested in this hardware we would like to be able to discuss it without the constant bullshit of naysayers whining about whatever pet peeve they have about the machine that they aren't going to purchase anyway.

So far I have not heard ONE PERSON bitching about the a1222 that actually HAS ONE so how about we keep the bullshit down and let people enjoy what they want to enjoy.

@agami

Well aren't you just an Effing RAY of sunshine?

How about you take your negativity and mosey on down the road someplace where someone actually wants to HEAR your shit?

And as a HINT, that place is NOT here...
HERE we want to talk about the a1222 and enjoy what we have.

WE DON'T CARE WHAT YOUR OPINION OF PPC IS.
WE DON'T CARE WHAT YOUR OPINION IS ABOUT OS4.1
WE DON'T CARE WHAT YOUR OPINION IS ABOUT THE ROADMAP FOR NEWGEN
WE DON'T CARE WHAT YOUR OPINION IS ABOUT HARDWARE CHOICES

WE DON'T CARE WHAT YOUR OPINION IS ABOUT ANYTHING

Is that clear enough for you? Did you get that?

GO
AWAY

Buh Bye!

Considering the price, I doubt anyone purchasing a motherboard or system has taken the decision lightly. Eldee's Guide is fairly extensive and gives a good idea of that to expect from the hardware.
