Hey all,

I was wondering if someone has actually taken the time to make a guide for beginners to Amiga 4.X to be able to get around and do things in this OS. I remember someone mentioned this a few months ago, but haven't seen anything. When I say a beginners guide I really mean BEGINNER. To include topics such as -

- What ALL the desktop icons do
- How to set up internet connections
- Where to get resources to make the most of your OS
- How to load files, clear memory cache, install on HD
Etc, etc, etc.
It would be perfect if the guide had screenshots of what you're looking for, what to click, and so on. I'm pretty sure there are others out there that wish this was made as well, so please don't start picking on us "Noobs" to Amiga 4.X, just help out. Thanks for your help.

Search gtmooya2011.pdf on OS4Depot or Jack.

Neither go into a huge amount of detail for Beginners (they don't read like a manual), but bullet point #3 you mention is well and truly covered by both.

There is two printed booklets in the box which cover the AmigaOS4:
- installation guide
- quickstart guide

Installation guide cover install and basic configuration (partitioning, locale, sound, internet and extras programs)

The quickstart guide is really targetted at newbies : history, features, first steps, available softwares and online & printed resources.

More over once installed there is the documentation drawer in sys: full of usefull files, the workbench help guide icon in amidock and the help application in sys:system/

I think what OS4 needs is something like Papisaur's Pack Ultimate for Morphos. This makes things a lot easier for noobs.

I will say that every noob should install JACK so they can use the "app store" its very cool and easy to get new software.

I´m working on a german website who will cover all these beginners questions. Just for OS4.1+ and AmigaNG Hardware. My focus will target at the greenhorns but for the pro´s too. I will reveal my website/project if enough content is filled there.

German speaking AmigaNG-Users can contribute too, just drop me a line. If we finished the project so far, translators can take our articles for several languages.

This is something I wanted to do too, but alas I just don't have the time.... would gladly help if I can though.

Perhaps it could be helped with donations.

And it would be cool if we had some one-click-install-all package for beginners to get at full speed with AOS4 system ASAP. (a little bit similar what Amikit/amigasys does for 68k setups)
Actually, such package could/should contain also a preset amikit/amigasys set up 68k HDD image and perhaps even a retroplay setup to be able to use a lot of .adf games easily.
Yet another bounty item?

+ superb Amiga webshop need to be set up, so that people could get free and commercial content (PPC, 68k and for retro emulators) in use as easily as possible.
The goal for the webshop must be to become better than what mainstream has for Android, iOS, PS3, Wii and for xbox360. (and it would be pretty clever if for example WinUAE users (and other niches+mainstream) could buy stuff from the same shop.)

For me, I have had to make a selecton of how to use my hobby time. Is it for configuring my AOS4 setup to make it usable for everyday needs or use Linux to do something else for Amiga community. I chose option B. I use x86 Linux setup to prepare CommunityComputer project/initiative.
(I need documentation tools, picture editing tools and vector graphics tools that are not superb easily usable on AOS4. Later I most likely need PCB tools. Also for PDF document reading and web site building my SAM seems a bit too slow. I look forward to buying Hollywood Designer when I start doing presentation materials related to the project. ... )

Dont any of you guys get Amiga Future?

The last 6 issues or so they been running a little tutroial on just this, maybe Andrease could be convice to release just these pages in a pdf file along with maybe any other good OS4 artical thats been in the mag for either a small price or a bounty?

Yes i have seen them. It was a really good tutorial. But not all ppl are buying AF so its good to have a guide on os4depot.

Thanks, this is a good start. To answer another person's question, I do get Amiga Future Magazine; however, it doesn't always have everything I'm looking for specifically. Then again, I've only got so many issues. I just thought it might be a good idea now and for the future, for people to have a reference in one spot, say like OSDepot or here, for them to access a "noob" guide. I don't get thick into the weeds on every possible way to make something work or why it works. I'm more of a computer enthusiast who just expects things to work when I click or double click them. (Spoiled by other OSes). Anyhow, thanks for the updates guys.

Hmm, I have started to get a feeling that there are more than like 2 ppl who are not only new to OS4 (which is frankly very similar to OS3), but new to AmigaOS as a productivity OS in general!

Typically I've always assumed that all OS4 users, new or old, at least have a fairly good understanding of Classic AmigaOS and all it's addon packages like MUI and stuff, the concept of libraries etc., but now I start to see that this might not really be the case. Interesting

Well I am personally *very* familiar with OS3.x software to a low level within the OS environment (I don't particularly understand the chipset so well.
and I have in mind to generally skip the assumptions and try to deal with anyone I meet at the level they indicate.

I've also got in mind something to help along any of the newcomers as well...

Just sorting out the steps towards completing what I need to do that.
