@SOFISTISOFTWARE

SCANdal itself is only frontend for drivers and it is quite portable and consist code for OS4. I use betascan driver format (from FxScan/betascan, ported from 68k to morphos and aros). Drivers are simple amiga #?.device form and they are ported/made from SANE too but it's is different api and SCANdal can't use *.so drivers (and other amiga-like operation system can't use *.so too).

btw. scandal and drivers work on aros too: http://brain.umcs.lublin.pl/~rzookol/pics/scandal_aros_1.5.jpg

Some time ago Stephan Matzke started to port betascan #?.device startup code (i.e. amiga api which is wrapped around SANE api and usb calls) to OS4 but i don't know if he finished it although OS4 version of Scandal can still use 68k betascan drivers for scsi scanners from aminet.

@SOFISTISOFTWARE
I can't speak for all brands of USB scanners & all-in-one printers but I don't really need scanner software for my HP Photosmart C6180. I have a flash drive plugged into my HP that shows up as a USB storage device on WorkBench. When I scan something it is stored in the flash drive and accessible as a file on my Amiga. Since I have to go to the printer to place the page on the scanner anyway, it is no inconvenience to press the scan button at the same time. In fact, a multipage scan is easier using the scan button; I don't have to return to the computer to start the scan for each page. Also, if I connect the HP to the network I can scan from a browser with the html page in the HP printer. My only complaint is that the scans are stored or sent to the browser as JPEG or PDF files and there doesn't seem to be any way to get a "RAW" scan.

I would expect that scanning to USB accessible memory would be possible with most brands of scanners and all-in-one printers that have memory card slots or USB flash drive port. Scanning from the computer isn't really necessary.
