| First let me start by saying the posting below is based on what is considered by the mainstream to be pseudo-science and often unpopular conspiracy theories. View it as fictitious writing which tries to connect various of the most common conspiracy theories with me playing to be the devil's advocate.
Also fiction can help to understand the believes of small minorities and are IMO thus worth discussing regardless of personal believes. At least these ideas result into interesting movies such as Stargate or 2012.
As it's nearly 2012, much of the world is in turmoil and we had some major disasters recently, most noteably the Japanese Earthquake/Tsunami/Nuclear meldown, the end of days prohecies are naturally heading into overdrive. For a change let's assume this holds truth what would be the most likely scenario?
Nibiru
Let's start at the beginning with the first known about civilization on earth, the sumerians. The Sumerian civilization goes back to about the 5th millennia BC, so about 7,000 years ago. This civilization is from Mesopotamia, Babylonia or modern day Iraq. Older signs of civilization are found in Iran near Kashan such as Tepe Sialk dating back to about 8,000 years ago.
The Sumerians had mastered the knowledge of writing and ancient astronomy. Zecharia Sitchin released a book about this civilization regarding the ancient believes of this cilization called "The 12th Planet" based on ancient tablet writings.
Reading through his findings there are some interesting ideas of how our planet and mankind started. According to Sitchin the 12th planet Nibiru is home to the Sumerian "gods" and reaches the inner solar system through a long elliptical orbit roughly every 3,600 years. The earth formed due to a collision between a planet called Markduk (one of Nibiru's moons) with a planet formely in our solar system located between Mars and Jupiter which they called Tiamat. This created the Earth/moon, maybe other solar planets and asteroid belt (located between the modern day terrestrial or inner planets Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars and the Jovian or outer planets Neptune, Uranus, Saturn and Jupiter). According to Stichin the Sumerians believed Nibiru was inhabited by intelligent life which they worshipped as "gods". According to Stichin the Sumerians believed they had genetically manipulated earthbeings and up to the point of Home Erectus then combined the species with their own DNA to create mankind, this to create a better workforce on earth for mining purposes and setup kingdoms for governance.
Modern day conspiracy theorist point of view:
Many Nibiru writers on the internet think Nibiru is actually a brown dwarf star (a star which unlike the sun failed to fully ignite due to its lower mass). Watching other star systems you can notice most star systems out there include 1 or more extra stars. Within a binary star system two stars of similar mass orbit each other as shown below:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Orbit5.gif
The brown dwarf star is thought to be dim (but at least 0.01% the luminosity of the Sun) when travelling far from its companion star and borders between being a planet and a star, it is estimated to be roughly 1/4th the diameter of the sun or 2.5 times the size of jupiter but includes various smaller orbitting moons (if you consider this to be a planet) / planets (if you consider it to be a star).
Due to the difference in mass between the Sun and this brown dwarf star the orbit is different than of the same mass binary star system shown above, more an elliptical orbit. Most of the planets in the solar system orbit the sun near circular, but Jupiter due to its mass has its barycenter (the point between two objects where they balance each other) above the sun's surface. Although the brown dwarf is only thought to be roughly 2.5 times the size of Jupiter it is also thought to be maybe up to 75 times the mass of Jupiter (a gas giant).
Planet X
Discrepancies in the orbits of the gas giants resulted into astronomer Percival Lawrence Lowell to look for a planet he referred to as "Planet X" by 1906.
What was thought to be what the orbit of Planet X could be like:
Conspiracy theorists believe Planet X was found since at least the early 80s using modern infrared technology, some think Planet X was already found since up to 50 years ago.
What makes people worry:
Many people on the internet believe comet Elenin isn't really just a comet, but really Nibiru/Planet X/Brown Dwarf and that especially alignments with the Sun/Earth causes earthquakes around the world. In the following youtube video a lady warns for trouble along fault lines for the day of the recent massive Japanese earthquake well ahead of time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95zMdTvoqcQ
The day before the massive Japanese earhquake on the 10th of March we had sightings of a second sun:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=MJkurPs9smA
The mainstream western media reported this as an extremely rare scientifically unexplainable "mirage". Some conspiracy theorists agree with this but explain this as the second sun being an enlarged mirage of Nibiru at the time located at nearly the opposite side of earth compared to the sun. The light is caused by the Sun shining onto Nibiru then reflecting (bent) towards earth's atmosphere. Meanwhile there have been many more reports of second sun sightings in the southern hemisphere. It can only be seen during sunlight as Nibiru is thought to be located next to the sun from its / our current position. The best continuous view of Nibiru is thought to be on Antarctica.
While "comet Elenin" was passing the asteroid belt 2 more comets have been reported by NASA. Comets Levy and Honda.
More infor on "comet" ELEnin: http://spaceobs.org/en/2011/04/10/comet-elenin-continues-to-increase-in-size-and-another-close-approach-with-a-large-main-belt-asteroid/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C/2010_X1
So what do you think?
Update:
According to the Sumerians, how one will know it's Nibiru (translated from tablets):
"The one who crosses the middle of the sea without calm, may his name be Nibiru, for he takes up the center of it"
"When the stars of Enlil have been finished, one big star - although its light is dim - divides the sky in half and stands there: that is, the star of Marduk, Nibiru"
First sightings I would expect to look something like this:
A slow moving (almost only moving due to earth's rotation) huge bearded dim star high above the atmosphere! According to NASA the biggest asteroid ever recorded to approach us is coming from the south.
The sumerian Nibiru symbol (also used for later cultures and religions):
Ancient royal seal:

the same BS like any other mythology.
If you want to learn more on the subject of a possible companion star to our Sun, Google "Nemesis star". This is a theory that states that a sun has a companion star, a red dwarf or possibly a very large brown dwarf, that orbits our Sun in a very large/eliptical and long orbit. The foundations of this theory lay in a curious (roughly, I'm speaking from memory here)26 million year spread between some major extinction events that are believed to be caused by asteroids/comets. It is speculated that Nemesis star passes thru Oort cloud on it's closest approach to our Sun and thus disturbs the trajectory of bodies found there. WISE is currently doing a survey of our entire sky in IR and we should now better in a few years whether such a Nemesis star really exists or not.
leave the Nibiru BS to SciFi writers and conspiracy theorists. _________________

A lot of religious believes seem to be based on prior religious believes. The Sumerians believed in many "gods". These anunnaki Stichin speculates they could be merely ETs with much more advanced technology. Greek and hindu mythology seemed to take inspiration from this. Zoroastrianism was the first form of monotheism (dualism as in God and Satan) as seems to have inspire other religions such as the abrahamic religions.
All of them seem to speak of great floods and times of much trouble. I find mythology interesting due to their various similarities. |

The great floods are believed to be maybe influenced by a meteor/asteroid slamming into Indian Ocean some 2500-3000 BC. This impact crater is called Burckle crater and is about 20-30 km in diameter. A wave produced by such an impact would indeed produce a catastrophic destruction and flooding on all shores of the Indian Ocean. As almost all high civilizations of the EuroAsian continent at that time were located on those shores, it is logical to believe that the great floods might describe the giant tsunami produces by the Burckle impact event.Last edited by WolfToTheMoon on 03-Apr-2011 at 07:27 PM.

Amazing level of perception there, old boy.
Apart from that comical gem, though, its all just the same old palaeobabble mixed in with some tired out old Planet X bunk and the Nemesis rubbish added for extra fun. The last I heard from these crank 'astronomers' was back in 2003, when the Earth was to be destroyed by a direct impact that mainstream science had failed to notice / conspired to keep secret.
You can relax: No evidence whatsoever has been found by modern science that points towards there being a planet with an orbit such as that suggested, or to a mysterious second sun which will suddenly leap across the sky to wipe out our favourite planet.

The orbit diagram for "planet x" is incorrectly labelled.
Only objects that orbit Earth have perigee and apogee. The "gee" is related to geology and specifically indicates Earth.
Objects that orbit the sun have perihelion and aphelion.
Generic terms that don't identify the object being orbited are periapsis and apoapsis. _________________ My new blog |

but astronomers and astrophysicists are more and more willing to believe that we could find a large body in the outer reaches of the solar system. And probably not just one. This isn't really controversial... Few were surprised when Sedna and Eris were discovered and these are pretty large bodies.
The thing is, observation of such bodies is very very difficult since they radiate very little from that far away from the sun. It's like looking for an needle in a hay stack, we will have to be lucky to stumble on one.
As to Nemesis star(star used loosely, could be a brown dwarf, which is again a failed star) hypothesis, it's an interesting thing... I personally wouldn't be surprised to see it validated one day, especially after reading a very fine paper on the subject by a pair of Berkley astrophysicists. Maybe not in a way of a orbiting star, but a nearby brown dwarf or a red dwarf. These thing are not hot enough to be easily visible and there could be, in theory, a closer star then Proxima Centauri we don't know as of yet. We'll see what WISE cones up with, should be interesting. Perhaps more then one. That could be a shocker. _________________

| I found that interesting, but still BS. Plus if it true or if any of these end of the world prediction are true, what can we do about it? Worry? Screw that, if it comes it comes, if not then LOL at the conspiracy theroiest, because if they are right they wont be able to LOL at us and say "told you".

We cannot do anything if "world is about to end". There are several scenarios that could mark the end of the civilization as we know it, but none of that are connected with so-called Nibiru BS. Nemesis star could, in theory, be the source of a asteroid or a comet hitting Earth, however that theory is yet to be proved and Nemesis star found. But, in the end, an asteroid could come out of the blue and wipe, for instance, Shangai or NY from the face of the earth. These kind of impacts are pretty common and happen every few thousand years, maybe even more frequent. There's little we could do with no warning and the devastation and death toll would be catastrophic. Imagine an impact happening in the atlantic ocean, the entire eastern USA and the western europe would be struck hard by a megatsunami. And since we're so interconnected these days, imagine the effect on the global economy. It could, literally, happen in 15 minutes from now... Last edited by WolfToTheMoon on 03-Apr-2011 at 09:31 PM.

Of course there's much evidence of major bodies slamming into the various planets and moons, including here on earth. Of course due to the lack of an atmosphere it's more readily noticeable for our moon.
If the Sumerian's Nibiru story is true I can imagine a spike of activity during the passing of this object through our solar system, for example due to the pulling and pushing of stuff while passing through the asteroid belt and oort cloud while heading our way.Last edited by MikeB on 03-Apr-2011 at 10:00 PM.
