Uploading an avatar is so tricky!

I tell ya, when uploading an avatar, this website is so picky! I remember having trouble with my first when it was over size. Well that's not all, if your file name is not liked it will be rejected without a reason. First it had an underscore so I renamed it. Still didn't work. What's most annoying is that it didn't report an error, just gave me back my old avatar. So kept playing with the name. It was only 4KB, under 100x100, and it still didn't work! It was hard enough finding software on my Mac to do a simple crop, Apple Works Paint sucks!!

It had .jpg on the end, which looks PC compatible, as it fits the 8.3 convention. But no that wasn't acceptable. So next I play around and rename it with .jpeg on the end and now it works!

Tell, what is it with this site and avatars? It seems to be a bit sensitive, and lacks things such as "Error: .jpg isn't an accepted file name."

@Hypex

the problem is the browser - and it's not a problem of *Amiga* browsers, even FireFox cannot cope with it! I hate to say it, but with Internet Explorer it works.

edit: ouch, I did not actually read what Hypex had written... just thought he was fighting with a problem already known to me
The problem is that even when I try to upload a perfectly correct image (like my current avatar, for example), I get an error message of the kind "mime exception: invalid format". Eventually, I found out that it's only a matter of browser (as said above).

So the site doesn't like Macs?

I got no exception, just my old one back! But, IMHO reporting an exception is bad site programming, as it looks a bit unpro. An error should be reported to the user. And given that avatars would be popular to add I think common errors such as size and dimensions should be report back a proper specific error. Just my thoughts.

Nice trick. But will it cut out a brush for me in a paint program?

Have to say that I've never had a problem uploading Avatars, using Firefox on Windows. Of course I used an Amiga program (or two) to do the actual cropping & conversion

I don't know. I only tried from AmigaOS 4 (Ibrowse and AWeb - I will try OWB after posting this) and Windoze (FireFox and Internet Explorer).

It seems that in my case the process goes further, as my old avatar gets deleted, but then the new one is rejected with the mime exception mentioned.

edit: tried OWB and it fails as well - in fact, as you can see, my avatar disappeared (I will fix it the next time I boot Winblows).
Here are 3 screenshots showing what I mean:
- AWeb
- IBrowse
- OWB

It's funny. I would have liked to use Amiga programs, and IIRC struggled with OS4 once to find some. But on this Mac, where I thought Apple Works would be better than enough I couldn't damn well find out how to cut out a brush! I must have spent half an hour looking at the docs, looking at toolbars, only to give up and declare it impossible. At least, if the tool was there, it was ghosted and wouldn't let me touch it. Stupid Mac.

IBrowse reported me a MIME exception last time.

Hey yeah, it's gone! You've disappeared.

And yet still here...

Yes, that is familiar. What I got on OS4 when mine was too big.

So, what do people think of my new happy face?
But the smile is cracked on the other side of it's face.

Yes, that is familiar. What I got on OS4 when mine was too big.

Only that the picture I tried to upload was a perfectly legal 64x64 pixels, 4-bit PNG - exactly the one in use now (uploaded without problems with Internet Explorer).
Just for the record, here's also a FireFox grab: FireFox.

FF looks strange in Windows, that makes it look old. Having a Win98'ish look to it.

@Thread

I've added a Christmassy Dune Trooper as my December Avatar using Safari on the Mac and it works fine. However, when I then view AmigaWorld.net using Firefox 2 (my browser of choice) it shows my old Avatar. What's going on?

Wow it just updated on Firefox 2 without me doing anything! Is there a moderator behind the scenes here? Cheers if there is

more than a moderator, there a little utility called "cache"

Next time reload the page

@BigD

As already mentioned, it is a cache issue.
Anyway, doing a "view image" with an old avatar showing, will show the new one instead, and update cache.
