Ok, just tried your latest version here. I connected my DVD player to the TV card (via composite) and let LOTR: The Two Towers play for the full 2hrs and 52 mins with no lockup or crash. The quality has also improved considerably with none of those "lines" apearing again. In case you want to know, here are my specs:

g3 XE
Hercules SMART TV Stereo card
Voodoo 3500 "Avenger" 16M AGP card
Creative Live!

Keep up the great work!

Wahey! I shall feel smug for the next few hours now.... :)

I noticed it's most likely to crash when it can't sync to something, so I'm wondering if the crashes are people putting an NTSC signal into it... certainly I get less crashes now when feeding it a 'nice' signal.

Keep the reports coming...

@Amigart

How many times did you try running the program? I find it usually works properly
the second time of running it - the first time also has the usual lines.
What kind of signal were you providing - what was the source? PAL composite?
S-Video?

Eventually I'll get it to run first time. :)

Though I'm no expert, I'd say the pal/ntsc issue is causing some of the problems. My video camera only outputs ntsc, as does everything else I own. I do not get a solid picture...it's somewhat distorted in that elements of the picture is being duplicated, one underneath the other. I'm sure it's in the timing. Also, images are black and white.

[edit]

I just tried your latest version. Am pleased to let you know that even though my system is ntsc, I experienced a steady picture. Of course, the window was framed for pal, so the ntsc signal stopped about 3/4 of the way down. At the beginning, the picture was unstable and distorted, but then it behaved as though something finally locked in. I was able to pan my camera around the computer desk for about a minute before experiencing the lock up. Incidentally, I needed to retry the program about 3 times before it finally began accepting the signal.

@jtubbs

Ah .. makes sense that you should get a lock up with an NTSC signal.

I think the problem, you see, is that the card is phase locked to a PAL clock (28MHz) not the 35MHz that NTSC requires. Hence, it's unable to keep the lock without resyncing, and I think it's the resync interrupt that's crashing the machine, even though I've masked it out.

I'll try and get an NTSC capable build pretty soon... then you can try it again! Glad you got a picture though!

Now THERES a great reason for a TV-Card: A1200 games !!

although PVR is a good one too...

@spirantho

I know the PAL clock is 28MHz (28.375016MHz to be precise), but isnt the NTSC clock similar ? something like 28.602MHz (to be not quite so precise !)

my working: 625 lines @ approx. 25 frames/s
is 15625 lines/s 908 clocks per line (including blanking and sync) double this product to get 28.375016 MHz (which is what it says on the crystal's tin)

and NTSC is 525 lines @ approx. 30 frames/s
would give 28.602MHz.

the only other difference I can think of is that NTSC doesnt use the Phase Alternating Line of PAL (PAL uses this for colour correction) earning NTSC the reputation of Never Twice the Same Colour in areas of fringe reception (ie just about everywhere).

@Spirantho

Hi, I just took delivery of a tv card that I bought just for the purposes of testing your program! (£7.50 UKP off ebay).

I thought you might like my feedback.

The card is a PlayTV pro PV-Bt878P+ I guess the model number tells you what chipset it has

I am using the version dated 11 August and it starts up first time more or less every time.
I get a stable picture after pressing the up arrow 3 times.
The picture is quite dark (but hey - it's a picture on my Amiga1)
There is also a slight colour bleed between high conrasts - especially red.
I have tested it by plugging the cvbs from my (PAL) digicam into the comp video connector.

The screen update is a little slow when playing back short video clips.

Spirantho, all in all this is most excellent. Well done indeed. You are to be congratulated

Has there been any progress since 11th August?

I Second that - I've been keeping an eye on this project along with the Instant Messenger Client capable of dealing with plug-ins for various networks (I cant remember the web address atm!)

Both are being developed for OS4, and its exciting to see this projects take shape. And of course the more experience Amiga programmers get with OS4, the better!

Thanks for the kind words...

but no, no progress since then- mostly because I really can't see why it keeps crashing! I'm kind of not working on it until I get the update... I'm sure I read somewhere from one of the Freidens that the chipset was responding in a weird way to certain interrupt conditions, so that may be affecting it, as there's really no reason it crash! The fact that when it does crash, the entire machine locks up doesn't help - very hard to debug a machine that's just staring at you!

I'll let you all know as and when I get further but for now it's a matter of being patient until the OS is finished. :)

@Spirantho

there is an 878 on my WinFast TV2000 XP Deluxe edition

I am looking forward to test your work, when I get my µ-A1-I
My original plan was to get rid of it, when I am going to give my Winblows PC (Athlon 1700+, 512MB registered...) to my parents

Cool, with the shortage of PCI slots that is just what we need.

@Radfoo

Don't these boxes not need highspeed USB to work? I would thing USB in the A1 is too slow for that.

I imagine USB2 is better, however they do work with 1.1. See

@Spirantho

I've got a Hauppauge WinTV Nova-T card here. It is a digital freeview card, but I couldn't tell you what chip it has in it.

If you ever get around to wanting to support this later revision card, let me know, and I'll help you out.
