Just curious. After all the warning and outright statements by the developers about Creative cards in general and this card in particular, why are you still using a known bad card?

@number6

also I own a soundblaster, I am using it because I bought it before
knowing all the possible problems, but generally I don't have problems
and my system it's very stable. Tunenet work well I can browse the net
while listening music, but PicShow with this image loks up (partially) my AOne.
Other programs loads the panorama correctly.

Paolo

Picshow also locks up my A1 with the panorama pic. BUT if i rotate the panorama 90 degrees pic show loads it. So obviously picshow has a problem with the horizontal dimensions of the image. there must be a perhaps unintended horizontal limit in the program.

I had lockups before I reduced picshow's settings->buffersize to 3 and settings->nr of pictures to preload to 3. (Sorry, I use the german version and dont now the original english menu syntax). I have a 256MB uAOne. Works fine with pics from a 4MP camera, never tested bigger ones. With three 4MP pictures in Ram I have around 80MByte ram free. Picshow is very memory intensive.

What problems? I have an SB Live! in my XE (have had since the day I got it) and I've never had a problem that I could blame on the card or its drivers.

In fact, even after being part of the betatest team for over three years and the developer team for two, I don't remember anyone saying that there were problems.

@Beeblebrox

4Mpx usually works fine here too, no problem. Only the really large ones (not talking about the panorama here, which is extreme) from new cameras tend to be problematic.

No, it is not. Remember that an image with 4 megapixels needs 12 megabytes of memory (one pixel needs three bytes). And if you tell PicShow to hold six of those monsters in memory, then 72 mb of memory is gone.

Additionally, if you start to manipulate a picture (e.g. scale it to screen size), then memory is needed twice, once for the original picture and once for the scaled one. You might have noticed that if you make a picture very small and then increase the size again, no details are lost. This can only be achieved if the original image data is kept im memory.

The only "memoy waste" I could imagine is that PicShow holds both copies of the image in memory, even if you go on to the next picture. But you can reduce this by reducing the cache size (= number of pictures kept in memory). If you set cache to 1 and preload to 0, then you have a similar effect as if you load the pictures into Multiview.

BTW, the panorama picture crashes Multiview, too, so it's not PicShow's fault. The other pictures load fine.

Bye,
Thomas

DaveAE was kind enough to do a fairly complete review of soundcards here:

@Deniil715

Don't know if anyone is interested but on my A1XE with512mb ram I find that an image of 8176 hoz x 7792 vert is the largest that picshow and multiview can handle adnd don't try to run anthing else while it's displaying.
1 pixel bigger in either dimension and multiview gives an "out of memory error" and picshow shows the previous image.

I'm using a Soundblaster card but I'm not sure which one it is and the box is long gone. Is there an easy way to tell? Would it say on the card itself?

@Deniil715

It's a SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 Digital, so I guess it's one of the 'bad' ones.

I am fortunate enough to have the built-in sound chip in my A1. I suppose there are no issues with using the built-in sound? Does audio in work with the onboard chip?

Would I need to change my Linux settings?
